Sam's Essential Snippet
Using Essential oils is a vital part of our therapeutic regimen at The Willows. If you have ever experienced a massage with us, chances are an essential oil has been incorporated into your session. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that when applied to the skin, can provide numerous benefits from pain relief to relaxation.
Summer and citrus seem to go together like lemon and lime- which are the TWO oils I want to discuss today.
Lemon is a favorite in any essential oil collection as it is so versatile and can leave the user feeling invigorated. It is known to reduce stress, anxiety, fatigue and provide an overall mood boost. Rub one or two drops of lemon oil between your hands and inhale for instant happiness or diffuse lemon to spread cheer and purify air in the room. You can also use lemon oil combined with water to wash or soak veggies and fruits, clean counters and floors and, when combined with baking soda, can remove rust stains. Have a sticky label that won't come off a jar? Soak it in lemon oil and watch it dissolve before your eyes.
Like lemon oil, Lime oil is uplifting, provides antioxidant protection and cleans sticky messes with ease. Because of its excellent antibacterial qualities, lime essential oil can be applied to wounds, scrapes, burns and bug bites to speed up the healing process and prevent harmful bacteria from taking hold. You can apply the oil directly to the wound or add a few drops to a cold compress and apply to your skin. With all essential oils you are applying to your skin, remember to dilute in a carrier oil. Citrus oils can be photosensitive meaning that it can cause a reaction when it is exposed to direct sunlight so avoid sun exposure for 24 hours.

Lavender Lemonade
Ingredients:
1 small handful freshly picked and rinsed lavender flowers, or 1 tablespoon dried lavender flowers
1 cup sugar
2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 cups freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 6-8 lemons)
2 cups cold water, plus more as needed
Ice
Thinly sliced lemons and a few lavender sprigs for garnish
Prepare the Lavender Flowers: Place the lavender flowers in a medium bowl and pour the sugar over them. Use your fingers to gently rub the flowers into the sugar.
Make the Lavender Simple Syrup: Pour 2 cups of boiling water over the lavender sugar mixture. Stir until the sugar is dissolved. Cover and let it steep for at least 30 minutes. Strain the lavender-infused syrup through a fine mesh sieve and pour it into a serving pitcher.
Make the Lemonade: Add the freshly squeezed lemon juice and 2 cups of cold water to the pitcher. Stir to combine. Adjust the taste by adding more lemon juice if it's too sweet, more sugar if it's too tart, or more water if the lavender flavor is too strong.
Serve: Add ice to the pitcher and garnish with lemon slices and lavender sprigs if desired. Serve cold.
